Visit the Puppet Museum in Lisbon this Christmas
Winter is almost here and the children (inside) are growing ever more eager for some presents. And what better reminder of childhood than a beautiful puppet? And what better way to connect with the child inside or make your actual children happy if the case than to visit the Puppet Museum in Lisbon this Christmas?
One of the less renowned (but in no way less fascinating) of Lisbon’s attractions is the Lisbon Puppet Museum (or the Museu da Marioneta, as the locals refer to it). It is a thrilling attraction for adults and children alike, housed in the magnificent 18th-century Convent of Bernadas.
This unique museum is not a mere “toy store”. It is a historical place, one that tells an old tale about how puppets used to reflect a vision of aesthetic, fashion and even social mores once upon a time. Of all the 1000 plus puppets which call the museum their permanent home, some date back as early as the 17th and 18th centuries.
China marionettes are predominant, but they are not only princesses in fluffy evening gowns, but also knights and their noble steeds, tiny imps, lords and peasants and many other characters.
As for the place of origin of the marionettes, most of them are “locals”, coming from Portugal, but there are only tiny guests from Italy, India, China or New Zealand. A visit to the Lisbon Puppet Museum does not just entail admiring marionettes. You will get a guided tour and learn the history of this art form – because puppet making is nothing short of artistic. Puppet shows are also staged quite often, so parents, be on the lookout this December!
You might like to consider booking a Lisbon car rental or getting a Lisbon taxi as well, since the capital city of Portugal is a wondrous maze of fascination.
