There’s a time for everything and the coming of spring opens new and exciting horizons to reflect on. And there is, among many things, also a time to golf… in Obidos!
I thought I’d invite you on a beautiful and dynamic tour of a town in central Portugal, conveniently located (being accessible from the capital city with a Lisbon airport transfer to Obidos) and boasting with a rich history and a lively spirit. So let’s see Obidos!
The town is very small and lovely. It only has a bit over 3000 permanent inhabitants, but it also welcomes a lot of visitors every year. Some of them come to play golf and in April 2017, golf fans are invited to attend the Royal Obidos Resort Classic on April 13-14.
The weather in this part of Portugal is lovely at this time of year, perfect for outdoors sports such as golf. To get an idea, spring in Portugal is like summer in places like the UK or northern Europe, so you will immediately understand how destinations such as central Portugal can be very sought-after.
Obidos used to be an old Roman citadel, so its origins can be traced down over two millennia. But even before them, the place had probably been a Celtic settlement.
Among the best tourist attractions in town, don’t miss the Castle of Obidos, one of the best preserved medieval forts in Europe. Its walls stand tall and the view from the towers is lovely. It’s a truly picturesque vantage point.
Next, the Obidos city walls are a masterpiece, covered in beautiful blue ceramic “Azulejos”. You can admire this Portuguese art and much more in town.
