Do you want to discover the hidden Lisbon this March 2017? Last time we tried to unveil some of the secret destinations in this magnificent and beautiful city that is just so much more than meets the eye and today we want more.
If you really want to take a moment to breathe in, enjoy a second of respite and pray for real, we may know a little spot where you can find a drop of spirituality, maybe. It is located on the Calcada do Menino de Deus and the very name of the church is Igreja do Menino de Deus. it’s recently turned 300 years old and the interior is all marble and precious carvings, the church having been built in the golden age of King Joao V in the 18th century, a time when Portugal was a rich and influential world power.
Looking on the tranquil and beautiful Lisbon on a sunny morning few would imagine that the city was almost entirely wiped from the face of the world on the morning of November 1st 1755. The quake, one of the greatest in history, destroyed most of the buildings, incinerated palaces and libraries, over 50.000 people are estimated to have died and 85% of the city was unrecognizable as a result. The Convent of Carmo was one of the architectural victims of the catastrophe, but its ruins are still standing, melancholy witnesses to the fragile nature of life. You can visit them and walk among the wide arches, imagining their old magnificence.
The first glass producing factory in Portugal was built in 1769 and it can still be visited today! You can go there on foot, take a Lisbon taxi transfer or book online a Lisbon car hire.
