Summer is the most glorious time of the year in this wonderful country at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, so to celebrate this, let’s take a moment to talk about some fun amazing facts about Portugal!

Apart from the fact that it is home to some of the kindest people in the world, Portugal is a wonderful country, one that boasts with an amazing history, an inventive cuisine and an outstanding number of natural beauties.

Here are some things you may not have known about our favorite spot on the map:

  1. Portugal is the oldest country in Europe – or at least the oldest one with defined borders. In fact, Portugal has preserved its borders since 1249.
  2. Lisbon is also old – so old, that it actually surpasses Rome by some 4 solid centuries.
  3. Port wine is the most famous alcoholic beverage produced in Portugal, a living legacy of the green vineyards along the Douro Valley. What does a wine bottle need, apart from… well, content? A cork, silly! This leads us to fun fact #3: Portugal is the largest producer of cork in the world. It has the largest cork forest, hence the 70% worldwide production of… cork!
  4. Portuguese is the official language of 9 countries. It is also one of the 5 romance languages (along with French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian). Portuguese is spoken by some 220 million people! And there are quite a few dialects to speak of, standard “European” Portuguese famously differing from Brazilian Portuguese, for instance.
  5. Portugal is one of the most accessible tourist destinations for Western Europeans. The sunny shores of the Algarve and the welcoming, cosmopolitan air of the capital city, Lisbon, with its yellow trams and cobblestone alleys, welcome thousands of tourists each and every year. Services are also relatively accessible: for instance, with under 30 EUR, you can get a Lisbon airport transfer to Lisbon city.
